I don't like using quotes often, but there is one quote that I quite enjoy: “Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don't know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and those are the ones I use.”
I am a big fan of his writings and writing style. To me the quote told me that a bigger word is not always a better choice. I also took from it that less is more. You don't need large paragraphs and overly complicated sentences to impress the reader.
Wordsmithing (patent pending on that word) isn't about the ingredients so much as it is about how you craft the words and ideas together to create a product that is greater then the sum of the individual parts.
